Use It Or Lose It

Hebrews 5:14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Read Hebrews 5:11-20.

Strong meat means solid food. We give a newborn liquid—mother’s or cow’s milk or a synthetic product. It’s not solid because we wouldn’t give beefsteak to a baby. Similarly, Paul told the Corinthians: “I’ve not fed you meat; I’ve given you milk because you’re still babies in Christ.” He told the Ephesians: “Grow up into Christ; become mature.”

What makes us grow? According to Hebrews 5:14, it’s spiritual exercise—walking with and obeying the Lord. Just sitting around and “singing ourselves into sanctified senility,” as Vance Havner says, won’t make us grow. The idea that Christianity is just something to enjoy is a vapid concept which doesn’t get down to where we live. The truth is that by exercising our faith we can have joy in the Lord Jesus even when tears are falling and the skies are dark.

My father used to say, “Use it or lose it, Boy.” After you pray a little, pray a little more and God will become nearer. Can you think a little? Think some more; God will become clearer to you. “Discern both good and evil” with God as your absolute, His Word at your side. You’ll learn up from down in a way people of our sensate culture never can.

Small thought here. How do you grow? Walk with God; use the faith He’s given you; exercise your spiritual senses to sharpen them; let God show you His perfect will and obey it. Want strong meat? God will feed it to you as you grow up in Christ.
